• Water storage in India's 178 major reservoirs has dropped significantly, losing 3.49 billion cubic metres (BCM) in just seven days, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC).
• As of 22 October 2026, the reservoirs held 123.228 BCM of water, down from 126.717 BCM on 15 October.

Impact & Risks

The declining water levels in major reservoirs pose significant risks to agriculture, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. Southern and western states, including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Maharashtra, are particularly vulnerable. Farmers in these regions may face irrigation challenges, while urban and rural communities could experience water shortages. The situation is especially dire in areas like Marathwada, where reservoirs are below 30% capacity, potentially leading to severe water stress.
